Hex by garthecho Hex by garthecho
QtCurve, color scheme, and Plasma theme.  Hex is flat, textured, and aims to be clear and easy to use.

The plasma theme is heavily based on Caledonia by Malcer: malcer.deviantart.com/art/Cale…

*It may be necessary to restart any running apps after enabling.

I recommend using FLattr icons: deviantn7k1.deviantart.com/art…

TO INSTALL

Copy plasma theme to ~/.kde/share/apps/desktoptheme/
QtCurve and color schemes can be installed within System Settings

     -------------------------------------------

   ***ARCH USERS***

QtCurve version 1.8.18-1 has been causing problems with this theme.  It's necessary to downgrade to a previous version for this to work.

CHANGELOG
-------

2.1 Minor update

- fixed readability of text entries in plasma theme.

Does this theme work with KDE5/Plasma 2?
I've been using it for a year and it is the most beautiful theme I've ever used, but now I'm thinking to upgrade from kde 4.14 to kde 5.3, so I was wondering if it is compatible.

I find no way to install and configure qtcurve on Kubuntu 15.04 and hex and hex lite plasma theme get broken with the update too. If you're under Kubuntu I don't advise using kubuntu backports.

Thanks!  I haven't made that upgrade yet so I can't tell if it would work.  In theory, as long as QtCurve can run then this theme should be alright as well.

Thanks so much for this- it's gorgeous, frankly. One question: I'm getting a weird grey, garbled mess on the lockscreen. I'm not sure if that's the QTCurve theme or the plasma theme. Any idea? (I've only changed the selection color background in the colors section). www.dropbox.com/s/keigwjtruamt…

Thanks a lot! :)  Weird.  That would be in the plasma theme.  Which version of KDE do you run?

Running 4.13.3 in Kubuntu w/ the Velours plasma theme (but Underworld icons, and the Hex QTCurve theme, of course). I get that no matter what desktop theme I switch to when I use the Hex theme. Very minor thing, but it's been driving me nuts.

Edit: this might have something to do with it: I'm noticing a similar gray splotch in Muon beneath the menu in the upper right: www.dropbox.com/s/tdonmtzqefbh…

This probably has to do with using a newer QtCurve version.  QtCurve has changed developers and things haven't been working right since.  You may look into reverting to an older version.  1.18.5 is the newest version I've used without problems.

Cool theme, using it right now together with flattr icons.
A firefox theme to go with it would make it complete ;)

Hey, I decided to feature your Hex Plasma/Qtcurve theme. Right now, i'm stuck at the Desktop Toolbar or the Panel Theme for my Plasma setup... please can you check what is the file you choose to change the toolbar/panel desktop theme from Hex? It's supposed to be on the "Panel Background" option under Desktop Themes right? I tried panel_background.svgz, toolbar.svgz from the widgets folder on Hex but still no results...

Which version of KDE do you run?  You should just have to install and select the plasma theme.

I run KDE 4.14 with Plasma-Desktop 5. Problem is, we don't have the option to install desktop themes.. we have to manually add file per file until we get the customized view.. here's a screenshot of my current setup. See how the theme details are chosen, and how my toolbar/painel theme still keeps the default): gyazo.com/f715d09dadccde476452…

So, if I'm understanding correctly, you've already copied the plasma theme folder to ~/.kde/share/apps/desktoptheme/ and it's still not showing up as an option to select?  I'll have to check, but maybe plasma 5 is doing something differently.

well, that did the trick! I did not know that I had to copy the plasma folder :) Once I copied the theme folder the option immeditaly showed up. Thanks for helping.

AWESOME theme by the way, really enjoying it.
(Took me so long to get this running, now that's worth it I have to say haha)

Hi garthecho,

Running ArchLinux, I'm experiencing an issue with your theme. After I selected the Windows Decoration as QtCurve, the windows decorations (the border of the dialog windows actually) become transparent, only the default buttons defined by QtCurve are visible (they are not the one from your theme).

Like you asked, I downgraded as far as I could (QtCurve 1.18.5) and I've still the same problem. Any idea?

Hmmm.. I haven't seen that yet.  Does the problem go away if you select a different color scheme?

Indeed you were right.

I selected a color scheme provided with QtCurve itself, and when I tried to apply the QtCurve Window Decoration, the border are still transparent.

I'm gonna reboot. Since I haven't rebooted this computer for a long time, while several KDE related libs have been updated in the meantime.

Ok I rebooted.

The windows decoration are now applied with successful --> goo.gl/7bs1lT

3 problems though:

- the icons in the KDE menu do not appear (seems to be fixed after yet another reboot and icon cache flush);
- the color of the menu bar is different from the rest of the theme (I needed to reconfigure the QtCurve theme to fix that)
- When the windows are maximized, I have a thin transparent layer between my top bar and the window. Seems it is related to the "desktop theme" since, the problem doesn't appear with another, like the default Air.

From what I'm seeing something must still not be right with the version of QtCurve that you're using.  As for the transparent line between windows and panel, it's intentional.  You're seeing the faint white line on the bottom of the panel.  Glad you have it fixed for the most part.

Do you know where can I change this white line at the bottom of the panel? I'm using the QtCurve configuration wizard available at Common Appearance and Behavior > Application Appearance > Style > QtCurve > Configuration...

Regarding the problems, since my current install is > 2 years, I'm currently installating a fresh KDE ArchLinux virtual machine to see if I can reproduce the following aforementioned problems:
- the transparent window decoration
- menu bar in a different color
- and absence of icon in the application menu

Keep you updated.

Cool.  Hope that does it.  For the white line, you'll have to use Inkscape to edit panel-background.svg in .kde/share/apps/desktoptheme/Hex/widgets/.  Just use the "node" tool to select the lines and delete them.

hah! that was exactly the direction i wanted to go to. 2 things, though:

1. is there a bright version of flattr? (i.e. one with bright icons for dark toolbars)? i can’t really see those monochrome symbols…

2. new versions of caledonia have much better icons! i love your panel and widget backgrounds, but the notification area icons, icon-tasks markers and so on of caledonia rule!

i also really really like your bright blue scrollbars and selections. awesome!

Cool theme while it worked though.

My guess is that it's a side effect of using a pixmap for the background texture.  I guess as a workaround you could disable the pixmap in QtCurve settings (just select 'none' for background image).  Just a thought: do you have the latest version of Kwin and QtCurve?  It all works fine here on my system, so I suspect something is funny with either hardware support or software versions.

I'm assuming it was the background texture then. I disabled that and it appears to be working fine now.

I'm using the proprietary Nvidia drivers (334.21) on a GT 640 if that helps narrow anything down. 64-bit Arch Linux, as well.

I had another user have problems with this version of QtCurve, and the solution is to downgrade qtcurve and qtcurve-utils to the version found here: kde-look.org/content/show.php?…. All should be well.

Your version of QtCurve is actually newer than mine (1.8.14).  I'm on the same version of KDE and Nvidia drivers, and am using a gtx260, so I don't think the problem's there.  I'd say it looks like a regression with QtCurve.  I'll take a look later and in the meantime you could file a bug report with QtCurve, if you feel like it.
